Elder care (or Elderly
Care) is the fulfillment
of the special needs and
requirements that are
unique to elder
citizens. It is a broad
term that encompasses
such services as
assisted living, adult
day care, long term
care, nursing homes,
hospice care, Elder Home
care, and Elder Home
Health Care. While
traditionally elder care
had been the
responsibility of family
members and was provided
within the extended
family home,
increasingly in modern
societies, elder care is
now often provided by
private, state, or
charitable institutions.

This change is attributed to the
trends of decreasing family
size, the greater life
expectancy of elderly people,
and the geographical dispersion
of families. Given the choice,
most elders would prefer to
continue to live in their own
homes (aging in place).
Unfortunately the majority of
elderly people gradually lose
functioning ability and require
either additional assistance in
the home or a move to an elder
care facility. The adult
children of these elders often
face a difficult challenge in
helping their parents make the
right choices.
Some services that can help
keep the elderly in their homes
longer are Elder Home Health
Care, Elder Home Care, Elder
Nursing Services, domestic adult
care, Elder visiting care, and
respite elderly care.
Elder Home Health Care (or
"in-Home Health Care") makes it
possible for the elder to remain
at home rather than use
residential, long-term, or
institutional-based nursing
care. At-Home Health Care
provides elder nursing service
in the patient's own home. This
service may include a
combination of professional
health care services and life
assistance services.
Professional Home Health Care
services can include medical or
psychological assessment, wound
care, medication teaching, pain
management, disease education
and management, physical
therapy, speech therapy, and
occupational therapy.
Life assistance services
include help with daily tasks
such as Meal Preparation,
Medication reminders, Laundry,
Light Housekeeping, Errands,
Shopping, Transportation,
assistance with Home Health Care
equipment, and Companionship. Activities
of daily living (ADL) refers
to six activities (bathing,
dressing, transferring, using
the toilet, eating, and walking)
that reflect the patient's
capacity for self-care.
Elder Home Care is the
non-medical form of Home Health
Care and is focused only on the
life assistance services. It is
designed for those who do not
need constant medical care.
Furthermore, for patients who
do have family caregivers, there
is very useful option of respite
care. This type of care allows
caregivers the opportunity to go
on vacation or a business trip
and know that their elder has
good quality temporary care, for
without this help the elder
might have to move permanently
to an outside facility.
